After a week of hostage negotiation the nightmare for the kidnapped five year old is finally over, and he will spend his 6th birthday with his parents: US authorities stormed the underground bunker in Alabama on Monday, freeing the little boy and leaving the kidnapper dead. The kidnapper is identified as Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, who was responsible for the death of Charles Albert Poland a school bus driver who was shot last Tuesday. Steve Richardson from the FBI commented on the raid: "Over the past 24 hours our communications with the subject have deteriorated and we were certainly concerned for the safety of the child. I can tell you that I've been to the hospital. I have visited with Ethan. He is doing fine. He is laughing, joking, playing, eating, the things that you would expect a normal five to six-year-old young man to do. He's very brave, he's very lucky and his success story is that he is out safe and doing great." The child is being treated at a hospital but appears to be unharmed and in good health. Authorities did not comment on the kidnapper’s death. It is not known whether Dykes was killed by FBI agents or if he killed himself
