Oscar winning actress Angelina Jolie has urged U.N Security Council on Monday to make war zone rape a priority. She talks about the stories she had heard from the victims, and the sexual crimes that she calls ‘a crime against humanity’
"Rape is a tool of war. It is an act of aggression and a crime against humanity. It is inflicted intentionally to destroy the woman, the family and the community. It ruins lives and fuels conflict. The United Nations charter is clear. You, the Security Council, have primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. Rape, as a weapon of war, is an assault on security. And in a world in which these crimes happen is one in which there is not and never will be peace. Addressing war zone sexual violence is therefore your responsibility and well as the duty of governments in countries affected by it."
Jolie has used her star power to give many that suffer a voice for most of her career especially with all her work as a UN Ambassador, in recent weeks she has visited refugee camps around the world. In that time she had listened to the horrific tales of sexual assault, violence and suffering.
Speaking to the 15 members of the U.N Security Council she hopes her voice and the voices of the victims will not go unheard.
