Apple issued media invitations for the long-awaited iPhone event today. Jim Dalrymple of the The Loop reports that the event is confirmed for Tuesday, October 4th at 10am PT in Apple’s Cupertino campus, just one week from today. The invitation brandishes 4 icons found in the iPhone, depicting the date, time, and location of the event. The ‘phone’ icon brandishes a bright red ‘1’, signaling a notification. The tagline reads, “Let’s talk iPhone.” iPhone rumors have been rampant for months, with talks of possibly 2 new handsets, an iPhone 4S for a low-end market, and the iPhone 5, the true successor to the wildly popular iPhone 4. The latest rumors introduce a device navigation system called ‘Assistant’, which drastically improves and updates iOS’s ‘Voice Control’ feature. The Siri-inspired system is reported to extremely intuitive and responsive. Actions include creating appointments, getting directions, and sending a text all through vocal commands. It is not clear whether this feature will make it to the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 with the iOS 5 update. Apple Blog 9to5Mac reports that the latest iPhone will include a dual-core A5 processor, 1GB of RAM, and an upgraded camera system, complete with an 8 megapixel sensor. The new phone is also slated to include Qualcomm Gobi Baseband chips, which will allow it to operate on both CDMA and GSM networks. Fans can expect iOS 5 and iCloud to launch soon after the event, with the next iPhone or iPhones to be released a few days later.
