The man arrested for hacking into the private online accounts of various celebrities, like Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis, and Christina Aguilera, said he couldn’t stop himself, and is now offering an apology.
The FBI held a press conference yesterday announcing the arrest of Christopher Chaney, a 35-year-old Jacksonville, Fla., man arrested on hacking and wiretapping charges in connection with the Scarlett Johansson nude photo scandal in September.
When asked why he did it, Chaney said it wasn’t for blackmail, but what began as a mere curiosity turned into an addiction.
The LA Times reports that he was able to guess the passwords of celebrities, using things like animal names, favorite movies, an old address, or the names of family members, then he had duplicates of all their emails forwarded to his account, even if they changed their password.
He said, “I deeply apologize. I know what I did was probably the worst invasion of privacy someone could experience. I’m not trying to escape what I did. It was wrong. And I have to just face that and go forward.”
He even admitted that he felt ‘relieved’ when the FBI found and arrested him, confiscating his computers.
Chaney is no longer allowed to use computers or any device with an internet connection.
He is due back in court Friday. If he is convicted of all charges, he could face up to 121 years in prison.
