Italian coast guard officers rescued 158 migrants, mostly of Syrian origin, from a crowded boat off the Sicilian coast on Sunday night (September 15), authorities said, as police released a video of the operation.

Among them was a heavily-pregnant woman, who was given medical assistance and transferred from a coast guard vessel to a nearby cruise ship, the Crown Princess, the authorities said.

The woman was then airlifted by helicopter to Catania hospital where she safely delivered a baby girl, they added.

The other migrants, including 44 children, were taken aboard the coast guard boat.

There has been a wave of Syrian migrants sailing to Italy in cramped conditions on fishing boats in recent weeks, with Italy's coast guard regularly releasing video of operations to rescue them and bring them to shore.
