The outspoken Mayor of New York in the late 1970’s – 80’s Ed Koch has died on Friday at the age of 88. He was Mayor from 1978-1989 and was a much loved figure of New York.
He died of congestive heart failure at 2am at New York Presbyterian hospital. Koch in his three terms in office gained much respect for his work in stabilizing the economy and regaining fiscal footing.
Koch is also the only U.S mayor to have written a best-selling autobiography which was then turned into an off-Broadway musical. After leaving office Koch remained a political figure by writing various articles, offering political commentary and being a strong ally of current New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
