Miss Universe is a joint venture between NBC and Donald Trump. NBC uses the two hour international broadcast to plug their latest shows and fuel the show with streaming advertisements. Donald Trump is the public face of Miss Universe, taking on the pageant world in 1996. His partnership however has not helped the ratings according to Nielsen Media research. ….Trump was rated number 17 on the Forbes Celebrity list and it was estimated his brand would be worth $200 million, Trump however claims its worth $3 Billion dollars……… Miss World, rival to Miss Universe is a British organized pageant created by Eric Morley in 1951. Similar to Miss Universe the peak of the television ratings were in the 1960’s-70’s. Both pageants broadcast to an international audience and can assume lucrative endorsements and distribution rights. This year the September broadcast of Miss Universe declined by 16% from the previous year. As the televised ratings of global pageants continue to decline one is left to question the place of beauty contests in the future. Both rival contests do however still broadcast to an international audience of over 150 countries. Controversy and scandal around pageants, like the drug addiction of former Miss USA Tara Connor (Tara Connor and trump photo) and the mass protests against the competitions generate media and public interest in the world of the beauty pageant.
