Carnival Cheer Splashes Across Venice

Venice has erupted in carnival cheer as hundreds of people gathered in the city’s narrow streets, squares and bridges to watch the marvel of colorful costumes and masks. This year’s theme is “Live in Color” and the opening of the carnival begun with a parade on Saturday. Thousands of tourists flocked to the water city to watch the fabulous gondola parades. In addition masked balls are held in ancient Venetian palaces, while others watched concerts. Masks also played an important role in the festivities. The carnival is one of the oldest carnivals in the world, and first begun centuries ago. The carnival’s end marks the beginning of lent and signals the start of Venice’s tourist season which typically runs into the autumn. This year’s carnival will run until February 12.
