Refusing to appear at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia and putting a stand against their anti-gay laws was entertainer Cher. The singer denounced the offer to open the show and said the decision to support her friends and fans was a ‘no brainer’
"Just sad and ashamed and I have fabulous Russian friends, so to reconcile what the new laws are and what's going on with the government and the people that I know and, probably no one will ever ask me to come to the Olympics [again] and be a goodwill ambassador, there were a couple of different things offered, so it was hard in one way to say no, but in another way, it's a no-brainer. You can't do it. Your heart doesn't let you go there."
Russia has recently passed a law which bans public display of affection by gay couples in the presence of minors. Many now have wanted to take a stand and boycott the Olympics. Cher is just one of the celebrities who is using their voice and platform to make it known that these type of laws are not right.
