Chris Christie Will Not Run for President

Ending speculation in the media for weeks, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will announce today he will not run for President in 2012. Christie has stated for months that he will not seek a Republican nomination for President, but pressure from party activists and donors reportedly made him rethink his decision. At three recent public appearances, Christie ignored questions from reporters asking whether or not he would run. Christie will announce his decision today in the state capital of New Jersey, Trenton, at 1PM Eastern Time, coinciding with Apple’s illustrious iPhone event in Cupertino. Republican New York Representative Peter King said he thinks Christie has a blunt style that would make him the best person to take on President Obama next fall. Christie’s reconsideration has been enhanced by Republican voters questioning the caliber of current frontrunners Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, and Rick Perry, governor of Texas. However, this doesn’t mean Christie would have entered the race as a favorite. According to the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll, Romney would lead Republicans at 21 percent, followed by Perry at 14 percent. The poll suggested Christie would enter at around 10 percent. Republicans voters still have one famed representative who has yet to confirm their 2012 intentions: Sarah Palin. The 2008 vice presidential nominee hasn’t confirmed if she will run for the Presidency in 2012, but according to the recent Washington Post/ABC News poll, two- thirds of Republicans hope she doesn’t run. With Christie effectively out of the race, he’s left Republicans with no national apparent alternative to Romney or Perry.
