Hollywood lent its star power to Obama's gun control efforts on Wednesday (February 6) as celebrities headed to Capitol Hill to push for reforming gun ownership laws. Singer Tony Bennett, comedian Chris Rock and actor Amanda Peet joined a coalition of politicians and gun control activists Capitol Hill to show their support for Obama's new gun control package in response to the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. The event was sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns who have lobbied for stricter background checks and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Bennett told reporters he wanted "assault weapons eliminated". "I still haven't gotten over Connecticut. I'd like the assault weapons to go to war, not in our own country and I'd like assault weapons eliminated," Bennett said Actor Amanda Peet urged Congress to act while acknowledging that background checks and improvements to the mental system were not fool-proof methods against gun violence. "Some mass shootings like the one in Newtown would not have been prevented even with a flawless background check system in place. Some street corner shootings and inner city violence is going to continue even if we ban high capacity magazines. Even with improvement to our nation's mental health system a troubled few will slip through the cracks and if and when the CDC eases restrictions on firearm injury research there will be a chorus of detractors who will say the data wasn't performed with unbiased scientific rigor. All that is true, but what's the alternative? Doing nothing will fail. Doing nothing has failed," Peet said. Comedian Chris Rock who frequently refers to gun control in his comic act said he came out to support the president because "when you don't it usually bites you in the ass". "The president of the United States is our boss, he's also - the President and the First Lady are kinda like the mom and the dad of our country and when your dad says something you listen and when you don't it usually bites you in the ass later on," the comedian said. Gun control efforts face an uphill battle against a powerful pro-gun lobby and a strong U.S. tradition of hunting and gun ownership. The right to bear arms is guaranteed to Americans in the U.S. Constitution. (Video Source: Reuters)
