Crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square on Friday (December 14) to watch the traditional illumination ceremony for the Vatican's Christmas tree.
The tree adorning St. Peter's Square is a giant white spruce, measuring nearly 80 feet tall.
The tree took its place next to the Vatican's large nativity scene in the square.
The Pope reminded everyone that the Christmas tree is a sign and reminder of divine light.
Just after sunset in a festive ceremony of Christmas carols, music and readings, to the joy of the crowd gathered underneath the tree, the Christmas lights were officially switched on illuminating the night sky.
