Depending on how you look at it, it's either an overly ambitious college prank or a school science project on steroids. Five friends, all students at Harvard University, have managed to launch a hamburger and a video camera into space. The project has been called "Operation Skyfall."
After purchasing the hamburger and coating its surface with lacquer to withstand the trip into space, the edible projectile was connected to a GoPro camera and GPS, and then to a helium balloon. The combined apparatus traveled upwards of 30,000 meters before the balloon popped and sent its cargo hurtling back down to Earth.
Several days later the students found the camera and intact hamburger stuck in a tree outside of Boston. After several unsuccessful attempts to bring it down, eventually a storm knocked it to the ground where the group recovered the video.
The pictures show the hamburger framed by the recognizable blue-green planet in the background.
