A massive explosion rocked Gaza City in the early hours of Monday (November 19), suggesting that five days of Israeli raids targeting militants was continuing into a sixth day.
There was no immediate confirmation as to what the blast was. The sound of aerial drones, used by the Israeli military, could be heard in the night sky at the time of the blasts.
On Sunday (November 18) Israel had pressed on with its air and naval bombardment of militant positions in an attempt to stifle militants rocket attacks launched from Gaza.
International pressure for a ceasefire seemed certain to mount in response to the deadliest single incident in five days of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel and Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip.
Gaza health officials said 72 Palestinians , 21 of them children and several women have been killed in Gaza since Israel's offensive began on Wednesday (November 14). Hundreds have been wounded.
