In one of the deadliest fire disasters of US history 19 firefighters were killed Sunday battling the intense flames in central Arizona. Two towns were evacuated as a result of the rapid flames that spread through the dry brush and grass with deadly fury.

Fire Chief Dan Fraijo commented on the great tragedy and loss of life:

"Right now, what we do know is that 19 firefighters were killed in what is probably the worst disaster that has taken place in wild land history here in the state of Arizona. We grieve for the families. We grieve for the department. We grieve for the city."

The fallen firefighters went missing and perished in the flames near the small town of Yarnell whilst attempting to battle the fatal flames. President Barack Obama who is currently in Africa has described the firefighters who were killed as “heroes”.
