Health officials across the United States have begun an investigation into the exact cause of an outbreak of fungal meningitis that has killed 12 people across the country. Dr Madeleine Biondolillo commented on the terrifying outbreak:
"The Department of Public Health continues to closely collaborate with the CDC, the FDA, and other state public health officials to investigate the exact cause of an outbreak of Aspergillus fungal meningitis, with 137 cases reported in Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. As of today, 12 people have died, and thousands more have been placed at risk,"
Massachusetts is seeking statements of compliance from pharmacies, after the outbreak was tied to drugs shipped from a plant in the state. All pharmacy compounders are being required to sign a statement saying they’re complying with regulations.
The action comes after a company called New England compounding Center shipped thousands of vials of steroid drugs linked to the meningitis outbreak.
