If you live in the United States, take a sigh of relief in knowing that attacks in the US have decreased over the last ten years. The increase comes as no shock, as shark attacks annually have steadily increased over a century. So what is causing the increase? Many would suggest that the figures are simply a result of humans spending more time in the sea.125 shark attacks occurred worldwide in 2011, 12 of which ended in the victim losing their life. 29 of those attacks occurred in the United States, 11 of which were in Florida. The global fatality rate is one quarter of all attacks according to the study co ordinated by the International Shark Attack File Report for 2011.
