The first heat wave of the summer hit Greece on Tuesday with temperatures expected to rise to or even surpass 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country. People walked around the centre of Athens wearing hats, light clothing and umbrellas to protect themselves from the stifling heat. Some Athenians unable to escape to the cooler temperatures of the islands opted for swimming at local beaches which were filled with children on their summer holidays. With the high temperatures expected to last until the end of the week, the country has made various air-conditioned rooms, available to the public, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly.
