Defending champion Gary Hunt won his third successive Cliff Diving World Series title on Thursday by winning the final stage of the 2012 series in Oman. The Britt held off the strong challenge on nine times world champion Orlando Duque who came second in Oman and in the overall championship.
Five thousand fans watched on as Hunt performed his trademark ‘triple quad’ dive to set a points total of 506.85. It meant that Duque had to perform a perfect final dive to regain his title but on his first series back from a serious ankle injury the Columbian just fell short, finishing with 505.00 points.
Hunt was excited about the victory:
"It was really the best competition I've ever done," I've never scored over 500 and to do it today when it counts I just can't believe it. I'm still a bit in shock."
