Rory McIlroy congratulated Tiger Woods on taking back the world's No. 1 ranking on Tuesday (March 26) via text message.
"It looks like he is playing really, really well and putting really well. He has obviously won three times this year and is back to the top of the rankings. He just seems like he is in a really good place on the course, off the course. So, it is good to see," Mcllroy told reporters at the Houston open.
Looking like his old imposing self, Woods completed a final-round two-under 70 for a two-shot victory over Briton Justin Rose at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Monday to collect his 77th career PGA Tour win and begin his 11th reign as world number one.
"As he said, being No1 is a by-product of playing well and winning tournaments," McIlroy added. "Tiger has done that more than anybody else this year and if he can take care of that, then the ranking takes care of itself. It is always nice to say you are on top of the world, on top of the rankings but if you play the golf that you want to and win the tournaments that you want to, then it takes care of itself."
A victory in Houston would put McIlroy back at No. 1, a spot he held for 32 weeks before Woods' latest win.
