India's Asian Games gold medal winner Pinki Pramanik has been charged with rape and cheating after medical reports appeared to confirm she is actually a man. Pramanik won a gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay at the 2006 Asian Games, but was arrested on June 14 this year following a complaint lodged by a woman, Anamika Acharya, who said she was the live-in partner of the athlete. In her complaint she leveled rape charges against Pramanik. Speaking in Barasat city in the eastern West Bengal state on Monday (November 12), Santomoy Bose, the public prosecutor, said a medical board had confirmed that Pramanik was a male and had the ability to have intercourse with a woman. "It's been proved by the investigative authorities that the allegation which was levelled by Anamika (Acharya) has been proved. It has come to the conclusion that Pinki is male. A medical board consisting of seven members have come to the conclusion that Pinki is male. Pinki is capable to commit intercourse with a woman," said Bose. Pramanik was granted bail by a local court in North 24 Parganas district on July 10. Meanwhile, Pramanik's mother, Pushpa, said her daughter was not guilty and that she would never cheat anyone. "My daughter Pinki is a very good girl. False allegations are being levelled against her and she is innocent. I have given birth to her and I know that she is innocent," she said A 29-second MMS showing the athlete completely naked has already gone viral on the internet. The video was of Pinki undergoing a gender verification test at a private nursing home after she was arrested on June 14, 2012. Another 2006 Asian Games medallist, Santhi Soundarajan, was stripped of the women's 800 metres silver medal after failing a gender test.
