“Schweddy Balls,” Ben & Jerry’s new flavor of ice cream that pays homage to a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, has drawn some severe criticism for both its unappealing taste and tasteless name.
The conservative group One Million Moms has been leading a campaign against the new flavor, urging people to write Ben & Jerry's letters asking the ice cream company to stop making it.
In a message posted on its Web site, the organization also points to Ben & Jerry's celebration of gay marriage last year with a flavor called “Hubby Hubby” -- a play on the popular Chubby Hubby variety – claiming that offending customers has become a ‘yearly tradition’ for the brand.
The message read, "The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive. Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket."
The flavor is named after a classic Alec Baldwin sketch in which he plays a bakery owner name Pete Schweddy. The flavor consists of vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum, loaded with fudge covered rum and malt balls.
Ben and Jerry’s spokesman explained that the company has a sense of humor, and that “Schweddy Balls” wasn’t named for shock value, but to honor SNL.
The Huffington Post held a taste test for the new pint, but it received a luke warm reception.
Some tasters said it wasn’t worth the hype, while others said it was just plain disappointing.
