With fewer than 20,000 southern white rhinos living in the wild, the arrival of a baby rhino at the San Diego Zoo was enough to make anyone smile. Lovingly named Kayode meaning “he brings joy” the latest edition to the zoo family frolicked in his enclosure, pocking out his tongue but all the while staying close to his mom.
The calf weighed an estimated 125 pounds at birth, and will gain around 100 pounds a month for the first year. When fully grown Kayode will weigh a whopping 4,000-5,000 pounds. Kayode is the 93rd southern white rhino calf born at the San Diego Zoo. Their mission is to bring endangered species back from the threat of extinction by their conservation.
