Italian coastguard teams rescued over 100 migrants in the early hours of Friday morning as their boat ran into trouble off the coast of the southern Lampedusa Island. Two rescue boats were dispatched in the morning after a satellite telephone call to the coastguard office said a boat carrying migrants risked sinking.
One hundred and nine people were helped off the boat at Lampedusa’s port, including one woman. Most of the migrants were from Africa.
The 12 meter long dinghy had been packed with people and had encouraged rough seas approximately seventy miles southeast of Lampedusa Island.
More and more frequently satellite telephones are being used to call in to coastguard services as migrants get closer to the Italian coast.
