Pope Francis urged the international community on Wednesday (September 4) to join in a special day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria on Saturday (September 7).
The Pope spoke in front of an estimated crowd of around 100,000 people attending his first general audience since the summer break.
There was huge excitement in the crowd as Francis toured the square in an open-top jeep at the start of the audience, blessing the faithful and stopping to kiss children.
The pontiff dedicated his Angelus last Sunday (September 1) to the crisis in Syria and condemned the use of chemical weapons, blamed by Western powers on Syrian government forces, but added that peace could never come through the use of violence.
