Korean-American designer Richard Chai debuted his Fall/Winter 2013 collection on Thursday (February 7) in New York, marking the first day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
The designer, who showcased a sporty, carefree spring collection last season, said that his fall 2013 feels more formal.
"For fall I love the idea of just clothes that felt quite dressed up and with a bit of an evening touch for day. You know, mixing that all up with this kind of tomboy - which is always an undercurrent of my collection," he told Reuters.
Shades of green, gray and purple ruled his runway - matching Pantone's Fashion Color Report for Fall 2013.
Chai worked the colors in with different fabrics, including wool, cotton and sheer silk.
"There is a very deep ever green, there is shades of olive, shades of military green. And then there is lilacs and lavenders. There is very, very vibrant violet colors. It really kind of starts off stark and then you will see how it builds into these deeper tones and then it ends in a very light hearted, kind of soft way. "
He dressed his men in plaid suits and oversized coats and women in structured pencil skirts and bomber jackets.
"There is very form fitting shapes for the women, but then there is this kind of oversized coats. And there is very shaped jackets, but they are more away from the body. So it's that play of things that are about volume but with control," he said.
And of course, Chai’s front row was impressive, featuring celebrity appearances by Christina Ricci and singer Ashlee Simpson.
MBFW at Lincoln Center runs from February 7 until Valentine’s Day on Feb 14.
