Sudden snow in eastern Japan halted public transport and caused dozens of road accidents on Monday (January 14).
Japan's NHK reported 267 people in the east of the country, including the capital Tokyo, had been injured in road accidents caused by the snow, which started falling early on Monday morning.
Japan's Meteorological Agency said up to 7 centimetres (2.8 inches) of snow fell in the Tokyo area, while 40 centimetres (15.7 inches) fell in Yamanashi Prefecture.
The snow has caused the cancellation of 862 domestic flights and temporarily halted some train lines in Tokyo.
Power was also cut to 6200 households in Tokyo and the surrounding area in the evening.
Authorities said the snow will continue to fall in some areas in northern Japan over the night and called for commuters to take caution on icy roads.
