Surfers took to the waves Tuesday (November 27) afternoon for the opening round of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach in Hawaii.
American Pancho Sullivan claimed the top score of the day and advanced along with 95 others to the next round of competition. Waves hit the famous North Shore in the 7-10 foot (2.5 to 3.5 meters) range on Tuesday, but forecasts called for them to diminish over the next several days.
The Vans World Cup of Surfing is the second stop in the three events Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. American Sebastien Zietz rode his way to a win last week at the first tournament, the Reef Hawaiian Pro. The final event, the Billabong Pipe Masters, is scheduled to take place on the best four days of surf from December 8th to the 20th.
