Susan Rice: My Nomination Would Be “Lengthy, Disruptive and Costly”

Susan Rice, the United States Ambassador to the UN has officially withdrawn her name from consideration for secretary of state. In a letter to President Obama dated December 13 she wrote, “if nominated I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly – to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities.” Ambassador Rice has come under heavy criticism from congressional Republicans who claim that her statements immediately following the September 11 attack on the American mission in Libya were intended to mislead the American public. Both she and the White House have denied this, claiming she had been given poor intelligence. Ambassador Rice will remain the US representative at the United Nations.
