Malala Yousufzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating education for women, has successfully undergone surgery at a British hospital to reconstruct her skull and help restore her hearing.
15-year-old Malala was shot in October and brought to Britain for treatment.
A team of doctors carried out a five-hour operation on Saturday (February 2) that included cranial reconstruction with a titanium plate, and a cochlear implant in her left ear.
Before the operation, Malala gave an interview in English in which she said: "I am getting better day by day."
She said thanks to the prayers of supporters: "God has given me this new life, this is a second life. I want to serve the people. I want every girl, every child, to be educated."
Malala is now in stable condition and her medical team is pleased with her progress.
