Two days before Tokyo hears whether it will host the 2020 Olympics, a message of good luck was written out using 2,020 candles at a temple in the city.
Tokyo's bid was an early favorite compared to those of opponents Istanbul and Madrid, but continuing leaks at the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant have been seen by some Japanese themselves as threatening the city's chances, in spite of reassurances by the government.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), meeting in Argentina, will decide on Saturday (September 7) who will get the 2020 Games.
Japan pledged nearly half a billion dollars this week to contain leaks and decontaminate radioactive water stored at Fukushima that threaten the clean-up from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that crippled the plant and almost brought the country's nuclear power industry to a halt.
As Saturday's decision approaches, Tokyo's Olympic bid team has emphasized what it says is Japan's economic strength and the opportunities available in Asia.
