Three Americans, three Filipinos and a South Korean were killed in a fire that burned a small hotel near a former U.S. naval base in Olongapo on Friday (January 11), the city's fire department said.
The fire broke before dawn at Dryden Hotel, located in an entertainment district, trapping guests inside rooms with barred windows on the second story.
The Olongapo City fire department said three of the bodies were badly burnt, and the victims likely died of suffocation.
Soot covered the rooms, and furniture, walls and ceilings were charred.
Investigators are exploring whether the fire could have been sparked by an overload of the hotel's electric system, but they have not ruled out foul play.
