Marwell Zoo in Winchester, England has a new attraction.

The zoo recently welcomed a new giraffe called Ruby.

Section Manager Ian Goodwin explained it is their 40th anniversary, hence the decision to call their latest arrival after the stone which symbolizes the milestone - Ruby.

For the first time in the zoo's history members of the public were able to watch the birth: ''We probably had roughly between 50 or 60 people in here watching her give birth which is fantastic for them to see it for the first time.'' Goodwin explained.

The baby giraffe is the first to be born to Marwell Wildlife's resident giraffe Irsula after a 14-month pregnancy.

''When the giraffe calf does come out, it hits the ground with quite a thud and falls from at least six feet from the mother so it was a bit of a shock to some of it I think, but obviously for them it was a very, very good experience to see.

Once settled in her new home it will be a while before Ruby is as big as her mother and the other giraffes.
