United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Wednesday, carrying an upgraded $121 million Global Positioning System satellite into orbit.

The satellite is designed to increase accuracy and signal strength for navigation using GPS devices.

Constructed by Boeing, Block IIF GPS satellites are expected to operate for twelve years, broadcasting signals at three different frequencies, including the L5 "Safety of Life"signal for civil aviation.
