U.S. State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Syrian opposition forces have made significant gains in recent days and President Bashar al-Assad regime's "days are numbered."
"I don't think any of us has a crystal ball as to exactly how this is going to go, but we do believe that the Assad regime's days are numbered," she told reporters in Washington on Thursday (December 13),
"The regime is doing in its desperate efforts to forestall the inevitable. It is using increasingly lethal weapons and indiscriminate violence against its people," she added.
Earlier on Thursday, NATO’s Secretary-General said he thought Assad's government was nearing collapse, and condemned the use of Scud missiles to attack rebels.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry denied these claims.
