Designers from around the world competed on Saturday (February 16) for the Woolmark Prize in the British capital, London. The emerging designers from China, India, Australia and Belgium, Japan, Europe and the United States showcased their knitwear designs to an audience and a panel of celebrity judges. Popstar turned designer Victoria Beckham, Donatella Versace and Diane Von Furstenberg were among the judges deciding who to award the prize to. The prize is primarily given to emerging designers and offers a launchpad for their careers, by giving them 100,000 Australian dollars, the equivalent of just over 103,000 U.S dollars. But as well as the financial assistance, luxury stores around the world like Britain's Harvey Nicholls and Italy's 10 Corso Como will also snap up the collection. The winning collection was by European designer Christian Wijnants, whose garments were hand knitted and hand died using a Japanese technique of folding and tiedying. Italian Vogue editor and judge Franca Sozzani, complemented Wijanants on his wearable yet creative style, ''Christian he got his dream, and, but you know what, in a way I think that when you get your dream you deserve it. Because he was experimental, but wearable, he worked with new technique, he was using beautiful shape, very flattering for a body of a woman, but not boring, not usual, not, how can I say? It was something different,'' said Sozzani. The show was the first time for the celebrity judges to see the collection on the catwalk and Wijnants said he was 'super excited' to win the award. He also said the celebrity judges known for their successful fashion lines were 'enthusiastic' about his work, ''There were very interesting discussion, because they were all very interested in the techniques, how the garments were made, and so I was explaining them the process of making the collection, was done the last few months. They were very enthusiastic and very, it was very nice reactions, so very happy.'' Previous winners of the Woolmark Prize have been Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. Wijnants may now be hot on their heals as he's due to unveil his latest collection during Paris Fashion Week. (Video Source: Reuters)
