Video of a pedestrian narrowly escaping death after darting in front of an express train in Australia has been released by Queensland Rail.

The footage shows a man waiting at a level crossing for a train to pass in one direction and then pushing open a closed safety gate and walking in front of another train coming from the other direction.

The footage is a reminder to all about the dangers of ignoring signs and signals at railway crossings, the Queensland State government's Transport Minister Scott Emerson said.

"The message has to get out there that people are playing Russian roulette with their lives and they will lose. That is the reality," he said.

Emerson said the 20-year-old man was lucky to be alive after he was grazed by the train which was travelling at 60 km/h through a suburban station in Brisbane last month.

Following the incident at Cannon Hill Station in Brisbane in August, the man appeared in court and was fined $2,200 AUD ($2050 USD) Queensland Rail said.

The female train driver was traumatized by the incident and had to take leave from work, Emerson said.
