The U.S. National Park Service lit up the Washington Monument on Monday (July 8) and will do so every night until it is fully restored after being damaged by a 2011 earthquake.
The monument which is completely covered in scaffolding will be covered each night at dusk with the light of 488 lamps.
The purpose of the lights is to make it up to the thousands of tourists who can at the very least enjoy the exterior of the landmark at night.
Park Services officials expect the monument to be reopened to the public in the spring of 2014.
